Sex Hormones: What Do They Consist Of?
A hormone is a word derived from the Greek word “impetus”. Some scientists define a hormone as a chemical which a cell releases in one portion of the body that starts sending out messages that impact cells in other parts of the organism. These hormones are built up from proteins and control a variety of activities happening in a human body.
Sex hormone is a chemical substance produced by a sex gland or other organ that has an effect on the sexual features of an organism. Like many other kinds of hormones, sex hormones may also be artificially synthesized. It has other names as well like sex and gonadal steroids. The ovaries produce the sex hormones. They are also made by adrenal glands.
Testosterone is the principal male sex hormone and an anabolic steroid. It is basically a steroid hormone which is found in mammals, reptiles, birds, and other vertebrates. In mammals, testes of males and the ovaries of females are the organs which primarily secret testosterone where as the adrenal glands also secret testosterone in small amounts.
LH (lutropin)
LH stands for luteinizing hormone. Another term for luteinizing hormone is lutropin. The development and release of the egg from the ovary is stimulated by this hormone. In females, ovulation is triggered by an acute rise of LH called the LH surge.
FSH
FSH is an abbreviation for Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). FSH is a hormone which is found in humans as well as some other animals. FSH and Luteinizing hormone (LH) work together in reproduction process.
