Symptoms and Treatment of Outbreaks of Cholera

An outbreak of cholera can spread quickly in areas having poor sanitation. The bacteria remain in the faeces of the people infected by Vibro cholera for up to a fortnight. This infection is often mild or without any symptoms but can be severe in some cases.

It is characterized by extreme watery diarrhea, vomiting, and cramps in legs. In this disease rapid loss of body fluid leads to dehydration and even sometimes shock. And if proper treatment is not given it can cause death. After the infection it can vary from few hours to days for symptoms to appear.

Shock is the most serious complication caused by cholera dehydration. If it is untreated the condition can lead to death within few seconds. Cholera can be treated by replacement of body fluid and salt. Patients are treated with oral rehydration solutions, which is prepackaged mixture of sugar and salts.

The patients are advised to drink rehydrating fluids in large amount. In severe cases intravenous fluids are given. Sometimes antibiotic are also given according to the condition. So cholera should be properly treated as it can cause death.
